Primeiro o traíram. Depois, apostaram com a vida dele. Ambientada em um pequeno país latino-americano politicamente instável, a história acompanha o Dr. Eduardo Plarr, meio inglês e meio latino, que deixou sua casa em busca de uma vida melhor. Ao longo do caminho, ele conhece diversas pessoas, incluindo o cônsul britânico Charley Fortnum, um representante na América Latina que tenta impedir uma revolução. Ele também é um alcoólatra arrependido. Outra pessoa que o doutor conhece é Clara, por quem ele se apaixona imediatamente, mas há um problema: Clara é esposa de Charley.
