Em 1915, Kansas teatro usher Merton Gill é um raivoso silêncio-fã de cinema. Quando ele traz Mamute Estúdios de publicidade gratuita, imitando estrelas Lawrence Rupert heroísmo, eles trazem-lhe a Hollywood para gerar um outro título; ele acha que vai ter um filme do contrato. Desiludido, ele assombra a fundição de escritórios, onde ele se encontra e é consolado por Phyllis Montague, pouco jogador e dublê mulher. Quando Merton, finalmente, começa a sua "quebra", ou seja, ele não é muito o que ele imaginou.
